According to Bloomberg, iOS 14 will stick to its schedule and be released in September, despite the delay of the iPhone 12 range, although the publication couldn’t provide details on when exactly it’ll arrive.
The bigger question right now is whether Apple will still host an event in September to reveal the new iPhone range, alongside plenty of other rumoured announcements including iOS 14, or if it’ll simply delay the entire event until the iPhone range is a week or two away from release.
The release of the iPhone X could give us a big clue: it too was delayed, not going on sale until 3 November 2017, but Apple still revealed it in September. With that in mind, it’s a safe bet to assume that Apple will hold its annual September event and release iOS 14 mid-way through the month, but simply not release the iPhones until later in October.
Apple took the unprecedented steps of confirming the iPhone 12 delay itself in July. The company doesn’t usually comment on unannounced products publicly, but during the company’s Q3 2020 earnings call, Apple CFO Luca Maestri told investors “Last year we started selling new iPhones in late September, this year we expect supply to be available a few weeks later,”.
iOS 14 is set to be an exciting update for iPhone fans, bringing some fundamental changes to Apple’s operating system. The biggest introductions are widgets on the Home screen and the App Library, a list of all installed apps, allowing users to remove apps from the Home screen without deleting them. It brings iOS closer to its Android counterpart, and seems to suggest that Android had the right idea all along.
